Centrality metrics and localization in core-periphery networks

چکیده
Two concepts of centrality have been defined in complex networks. The first considers the centrality of a node and many different metrics for it has been defined (e.g. eigenvector centrality, PageRank, non-backtracking centrality, etc). The second is related to a large scale organization of the network, the core-periphery structure, composed by a dense core plus an outlying and loosely-connected periphery. In this paper we investigate the relation between these two concepts. We consider networks generated via the Stochastic Block Model, or its degree corrected version, with a core-periphery structure and we investigate the centrality properties of the core nodes and the ability of several centrality metrics to identify them. We find that the three measures with the best performance are marginals obtained with belief propagation, PageRank, and degree centrality, while non-backtracking and eigenvector centrality (or MINRES [10], showed to be equivalent to the latter in the large network limit) perform worse in the investigated networks.

The Application of Complex Networks Analysis to Assess Iran's Trade and It's Most Important Trading Partners in Asia
The existing trade models suggest that for tradable goods potential partners can be many, but eventually only one (the one offering the best price) should be selected, therefore relatively few (unidirectional) trade links will appear between countries. If the structure of international trade flows describes as a network, trade link would give rise between countries. This paper exploit recently-...
متن کاملHow Influential Are You: Detecting Influential Bloggers in a Blogging Community
Blogging is a popular activity with high impact on marketing, shaping public opinions, and informing the world about major events from a grassroots point of view. Influential bloggers are recognized by businesses as significant forces for product promotion or demotion, and by oppressive political regimes as serious threats to their power. This paper studies the problem of identifying influentia...
متن کاملCore and periphery in networks
We study a model of network formation where the bene ts from connections exhibit decreasing returns and decay with network distance. We show that the unique equilibrium network is a periphery-sponsored star, where one player, the center, maintains no links and earns a high payo¤, while all other players maintain a single link to the center and earn lower payo¤s. Both the star architecture and p...

To investigate the structure of the genomic interaction network built from yeast gene-expression compendium dataset of hundreds of systematic perturbations, social affiliation network analysis methodologies were applied through quantifying various density, closeness and centrality measures and exploring core-periphery structures. Genes affected by a larger number of perturbations were found to ...

In virtual transactions, 2-mode network about “user-product” is constructed by e-commerce behavior between users and products. Based on binary matrix of evaluating products by users in virtual transactions, this paper discusses that 2-mode and 1-mode network structure between products and users from the whole network of social network analysis prospect. First, a model about “user-product” is co...
